(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychelles’ Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday remanded until mid-April a Kenyan woman arrested by local authorities during the weekend in possession of 210 grammes of cocaine.

The suspect, Marietta Anyango, was arrested for the offences of conspiracy to import controlled drugs, importation of a controlled drug and trafficking in controlled drugs.

The Kenyan national will be brought back before the Magistrate's Court on April 16.

Speaking to SNA after the court’s hearing, an officer of the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) said that Anyango boarded an Ethiopian Airlines flight and landed in Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean, on Friday.

The officer said that the “Kenyan national was arrested while going through the scanner at the airport. The drug was detected in her private part.”

In a press communique on Tuesday, the local Anti-Narcotics Bureau said that "the arrest of the Kenyan national was in result of the good collaboration and exchange of information that exists between Seychelles and Kenya in combat narcotics."

"Further investigation is ongoing in pursuing other associates involved in this case," added the communique.

According to the Kenyan news service, Jamhuri News, an officer privy to the investigations, said “the drugs were packaged in Nairobi meaning the accomplices are here.”

Jamhuri added that “the suspects are among several Kenyans who have been arrested in the last few months for being in possessions of drugs. In January, a Kenya Airways cabin crew was arrested after being found in possession of narcotics believed to be heading to China.”
