(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychelles police has reported that a 38-year old woman Maureen Crispin was found dead in a police station cell on Praslin, the second most populated island of the Seychelles.

She was found unresponsive last night at the Grand Anse Praslin police station.

“Around 6.51pm…(..).. an officer who had just reported for his shift called on Maureen and saw that she did not reply,” reads the police statement issued this morning.

According to the police, the officer, with the help of two others got the keys to unlock the cell, “when they unlocked the bars they had some difficulty to get it to open…(…) when it finally opened they called to Maureen again and she still did not answer,” says the police.

“They saw that there was a piece of cloth tied to her neck…(..).. after untying it they saw it was a striped, black and white underwear.”

Maureen was transported to Baie St Anne hospital, where she was certified dead at 7.20pm local time.

The police is awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death.

“The police had arrested Maureen after a resident of Grande Anse Praslin had sought the assistance of the police saying she was fighting with the complainant’s brother. When the police arrest Maureen at 4.46pm, she was under the influence of alcohol,” reads the statement.
