2 of 3 suspects in connection with Spanish sailor's death charged by Seychelles' court

(Seychelles News Agency) - Two of the three persons arrested in connection with the death of a crew member of a Spanish fishing vessel last Friday have been formally charged, the Seychelles police said on Tuesday.

The three suspects -- a 36-year-old man and two women aged 17 and 35 -- appeared in court for the second time on Monday after being remanded last week, said the police. 

The 35-year-old woman has been charged with involuntary manslaughter while the man has been charged with accessory for assisting the suspect after the Spanish national died. The 17-year-old was conditionally released.

The police said that the investigation has shown that the Spanish national had died in the presence of the accused woman who had then sought the assistance of the man – a driver -- to leave the body at Ile du Port at 7 a.m. the same day. 

The body of the Spanish national -- aged 47 -- was found at Ile du Port, a man-made island near the Seychelles' Port Victoria last Friday, just after the bus depot of the Seychelles Public Transport Corporation (SPTC), opposite the playing field of the Independent school. The man had been identified by the crew members of the Spanish vessel -- Draco -- who came on the scene. The fishing vessel had docked in Port Victoria a day before the incident happened.  

Last Friday the police had said that the incident was reported at around 11:15 a.m.

According to the police, the autopsy result has shown that the Spanish national died of a heart attack and water in the lungs, consistent with the use of illegal substances.

The police added that they await the results of samples sent abroad for further analysis to complete the investigation.
