Seychelles Police investigate possession of turtle meat

(Seychelles News Agency) - A man and a woman have been questioned by the Seychelles police as part of investigation relating to the offence of turtle meat possession.

In a statement issued this afternoon the Seychelles Police say that the man is from the Southern part of the main island of Mahe while the lady is from the central Mahe region.

“They were questioned and later released yesterday after what is suspected to be turtle meat was discovered and seized at their place” adds the statement.

“What is suspected to be turtle meat was discovered at the place of both the man and the woman in question,” a police spokesperson told SNA.

The authorities were tipped off by somebody as part of the newly launched crime stoppers campaign, whereby members of the public are encouraged to report suspicious activities.

The police is working in collaboration with the Seychelles Ministry responsible for environment as it pursues its investigation in this case.

It is to be noted that the poaching and killing of sea turtles is illegal in the Indian Ocean archipelago.

Anyone found guilty of possessing turtle meat can be fined or can even be sentenced to prison.
