US naval ship USS Nitze makes port call to Seychelles

(Seychelles News Agency) - The US Navy’s guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze is currently visiting the Seychelles Port of Victoria, the US Navy has confirmed in a press statement posted on its website.

The vessel arrived in the Indian Ocean archipelago yesterday for a scheduled visit aimed at strengthening maritime partnerships and enhancing regional stability.

It is also an opportunity for the sailors to relax and explore the Seychelles’ beaches and culture.

Port Victoria, the port of the capital of the Seychelles archipelago, is a popular port of call for rest and recreation for military vessels based in the Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa involved in different international anti-piracy missions in the region, including Operation Atalanta, the European Union’s counter-piracy operation off the coast of Somalia, as well as NATO and Combined Maritime Forces operations.

"Nitze is happy to be here in Port Victoria. This port visit provides us with an opportunity to continue our partnership with Seychelles," said Nitze's commanding officer, Cmdr. John Bub in the statement.

"Strengthening partnerships such as the one we enjoy with Seychelles help regional safety and security throughout the Indian Ocean."

While sojourning in the Indian Ocean island state the sailors are also expected to engage in community projects at one of the children's homes in the country.
