(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychelles President James Michel has sent a message of condolences to Benin's President Thomas Yayi Boni following the death of the country's former president Mathieu Kerekou.
Kerekou who remained at the helm of the West African nation's government for almost 30 years from 1972 to 1991, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 82.
According to a press statement issued by the Seychelles Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Transport, Michel said he was saddened to learn of Kerekou’s passing.
"In Seychelles, we will remember President Kerekou as a great character of the modern history of our continent and as one of the African leaders who dedicated their lives to the service of their country and has strived to preserve his greatness and dignity," said Michel adding that he can relate to the pain being felt by the people of Benin.
Kerekou died at his home in Cotonou. The cause of his death and funeral arrangements have not been announced yet.
Meanwhile, Benin's President Thomas Boni Yayi has declared a week of official mourning.
