(Seychelles News Agency) - The President of the Seychelles, James Michel has said that the Indian Ocean archipelago of 90,000 people stands in solidarity with Kenya following the massacre of 147 people at Garissa University in the north-east of Kenya.
In a message of condolence addressed to the Kenyan President, Uhuru Kenyatta, President Michel expressed “profound sadness following the senseless shooting in Garissa” on behalf of the people and government of the Seychelles archipelago, which lies some 1,500 kilometres to the east of Kenya.
“Seychelles will never condone such cowardly acts of terror aimed at instilling fear and propagating discord amongst our people,” said President Michel in the statement.
“The people of Seychelles stand shoulder to shoulder with Kenya in these darkest of days.”
Somalian Al-Shabaab gunmen stormed the university’s campus in the early hours of Thursday morning, killing students indiscriminately before laying the campus under siege from Kenyan security forces responding to the attack.
All four gunmen detonated suicide vests, killing themselves after their shooting spree in the day-long siege.
On Friday, Kenya's interior minister addressed the media in front of the university campus after security forces had regained control, vowing that the country would not bow to terrorist threats, according to AFP.
“Kenya's government will not be intimidated by the terrorists who have made killing innocent people a way to humiliate the government," said Joseph Nkaissery.
"The government is determined to fight back the terrorists, and I am confident we shall win this war against our enemies."
