(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychelles’ Magistrates Court has remanded for 14 days a Tanzanian national arrested on suspicion of importation of a controlled drug, the Anti-Narcotics Bureau (ANB) said on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Tanzanian businessman was arrested on Monday, a day after his arrival on an Air Seychelles flight from Johannesburg by ANB officers in collaboration with customs officers, the communique said.

The Tanzanian was arrested in possession of approximately 750 grams of suspected cocaine in cylindrical packets.

He will reappear in court on November 25.

Last month, the Anti-Narcotics Bureau had expressed concerns over the importation and trafficking of controlled drugs, especially heroin and cocaine, in the Indian Ocean region.

Both drugs are Class A controlled drugs under Seychelles’ Misuse of Drugs Act 2016 and considered to be among the strongest and most dangerous drugs worldwide.

In the figures given by ANB from January to October, a total of 2.36 kilogrammes of cocaine was seized at the international airport of Seychelles, an archipelago in the western Indian Ocean.
