(Seychelles News Agency) - The Seychellois football club Cote d’Or will start its first-round journey in the Total Champions League competition of the Confederation of African Football against a South African side on Saturday.
Cote d’Or will face Mamelodi Sundowns in Seychelles, a group of 115 islands in the western Indian Ocean. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. local time at Stad Linite.
The Praslin-based team qualified for the first round after eliminating Fomboni FC from Comoros on the away goal advantage following a 3-3 aggregate score. Cote d’Or made a 2-2 draw in Comoros and then a 1-1 draw in Seychelles in August.
The team manager, Andre Bedier, told SNA on Thursday that this match will be a serious challenge.
“Certainly it will be a big challenge for us since we know Sundowns. We have seen them playing through the DSTV sports programme, so we know it’s a much tougher team than the Comorian side. We are going to take it much more seriously than the other one and seek a result which will give us a fighting chance in the return leg."
Bedier is calling on all Seychellois football fans to come and give their support to Cote d’Or.
“You never know -- we can make history in Cote d’Or’s football on Saturday and defeating a team like Sundowns at the Stad Linite will be an achievement. So we really need the moral support of all Seychellois,” he said.
For the South African side, this is not the first trip to Seychelles for the Champions League. Sundowns will be remembering the encounter with St Michel in 2015 which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The qualifying round of the Total Champions League competition is played on a home-and-away two-legged basis. If the aggregate score is tied after the second leg, the away goals rule will be applied. If there is still a tie the winner will be decided on a penalty shootout.
The second leg is scheduled for September 27 in South Africa.
